Four Work Preference Measures

The Four Work Preferences Scales—Relationships, Information, Decisions, and Organization (RIDO)—describe how personality influences the way people prefer to work. These preferences influence how individuals build relationships, process information, make decisions, and structure their work. They’re not fixed traits, but adaptable tendencies that help explain team dynamics. Understanding the diversity of work preferences enables teams to play to their strengths, navigate differences, and improve collaboration.

The Team Management Wheel outlines eight essential team roles and the eight Types of Work required for high performance. It also features the Linking Skills necessary for aligning people and tasks, enabling effective coordination and leadership.

Underlying the Wheel is the Four Work Preferences ('RIDO') framework, which examines how personality influences work preferences across four scales:

  • How individuals prefer to relate to others (Relationships)

  • How they gather and use information (Information)

  • How they make decisions (Decisions)

  • How they organize themselves and others (Organization)

These preferences aren't fixed traits, but sit along a continuum that reflects natural tendencies. Each person’s role on the Team Management Wheel highlights the kinds of work they’re drawn to and the preferences they’re most likely to exhibit.

By recognizing and valuing the diversity of work preferences within a team, organizations can create a more inclusive and high-performing environment—one where strengths are maximized, gaps are managed, and collaboration thrives.
